CIM Manitoba Chapter President’s Outgoing Remarks

November 17, 2016

By Thomas Ritter, CET, C.I.M., C.Mgr.

CIM Manitoba Chapter AGM – October 3, 2016

As I reflected on where the last 2 and ¾ years have gone, I tried to recall everything that has happened and has been accomplished by this board; I needed to make a list of these.

  1. 50th Anniversary Gala.
  2. Growth of the Board of Directors.
  3. Chapter 5 year plan development and implementation.
  4. Improved meeting agendas.
  5. Improved marketing activities.
  6. The use of social media locally and nationally.
  7. Improved relations with the U of M.
  8. Chapter operating costs improvements through analysis of expenditures and refining things like website, email, phone, etc.
  9. Participation in the HRMAM and Chamber of Commerce.
  10. Not For Profit Corporation changes.
  11. Chapter directional alignment with National.
  12. Standardizing the board’s activities throughout the year.
  13. Branch to Chapter name change.
  14. Constitutional bylaw development.
  15. Careers in Motion being replaced by the Professional Managers Symposium.
  16. Re-establishing PRIME and PRAISE Award presentations.
  17. Addition of new Chapter Life Members.
  18. Flattening the board structure and increasing responsibilities of all directors.
  19. Annual financial audits.
  20. The change from Graduation to Certification celebration.
  21. After Term Refreshers elimination.
  22. Inexperienced directors now having experience as these people you have elected tonight, most, are with the board longer than 2 years. New directors (two) tonight that are wanting to get involved.

I may have missed a few. Many things have happened……..and have been accomplished because of the dedication of this board and the willingness to improve.

I have had the privilege of working with these people and can tell you that I am honored to have gotten to work with all of them. They are focused and dedicated. They all share the passion for this organization and what the designation stands for. We have become a team.

I would like to think that through my time as President, we are better. But we are not there yet. It is time to pass the torch to Gilles Abraham, your new President. I know he will continue with the goals and objectives we have set out 2 years ago. He will change the direction, as required, to improve the value of membership and he has my full support and assistance wherever needed.

What is in the future?

  • Things like the Charted Manager, the professional designation of the future, will be passed at the National AGM on October 22. This in itself is the biggest and best thing that could happen to our organization. It would not surprise me if this alone, when we go to market, will bring us to the 1000 member strong numbers we believe that we should be.
  • Professional Managers Symposium 2017!
  • National AGM and Professional Symposium October 2018!

In business and in life, we sometimes cross the paths of people we may not have if we weren’t involved in extracurricular activities. I can tell you that there is a colleague that I also consider a friend that I have today because of the CIM. I could not have done this “job” without her.  She kept me in line, made me laugh, offered opinions and through the last three years I have truly enjoyed working with her. Sarah Gould, thank you for everything!

To the directors who believe in the direction we are heading. Thank you!

To the members who allowed me to lead this organization. Thank you!

Gilles, it’s all yours!

1st Annual Professional Managers Symposium

March 14, 2016

The University of Manitoba and the Canadian Institute of Management are pleased to invite you to our 1st Annual Professional Managers Symposium, a one-day professional development event to be held on April 29th, 2016 at the Victoria Inn, Winnipeg. This inaugural symposium is an opportunity for professional managers, CIM students and graduates, as well as current and emerging leaders to

  • explore proven leadership practices;
  • discuss leadership models that create a shared vision, build successful teams and inspire organizational change; and
  • gain better understanding of their personal leadership style.

You will convene with experts and colleagues to examine innovative approaches to leadership and reflect on the role of the manager as a leader. This forum will serve as an opportunity for networking and for increasing the awareness of management as a profession.

An exciting line-up of speakers coming from a wide range of backgrounds – including Winnipeg Free Press Business Reporter Martin Cash; the former national coach of the Irish and the Canadian field hockey team, Gene Muller; as well as accomplished leadership consultants Stephen DeGroot and Dianne McCoy – will discuss their transformative process of Manager to Leader, and reveal to you how this can positively impact your workplace and professional career.

Join our keynote speaker, Michael Kerr, Hall of Fame international business speaker and author of The Humor Advantage on April 29th for an inspiring and transformative learning opportunity.

Free Course in University of Manitoba’s Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Applied Leadership for CIM Members

January 8, 2016

The CIM Manitoba Chapter is continuously seeking ways to add value to your CIM membership.  We recognize you have successfully completed the CIM program and may now be looking for the next step in your continued learning and development. The University of Manitoba, Extended Education is offering CIM members a free course registration in the University of Manitoba’s newly launched Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Applied Leadership.

The Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Applied Leadership is ideally suited for graduates of the CIM program who want to enhance and expand their leadership potential to inspire change and innovation in themselves and others.  The program focuses on deepening core competencies of successful leadership – including transformational leadership skills, communication skills, change management and project management.

As one of our valued CIM members you qualify to register for the first course in this program – Learning for Leaders in the 21st Century:  Developing Personal Leadership – at no charge when you apply into the program before January 25.

The Learning for Leaders course will focus on the personal qualities and abilities that are critical for the practice and modeling of effective leadership. As traditional hierarchical approaches to leadership are being replaced by leadership through influence, credibility is established through how values and purposes are consistently enacted and embodied in the workplace. It will offer learners an intentional shift away from deeply rooted individualistic and non-systemic views of leadership and their corresponding practices to building personal mastery.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Manveer Dhillon at manveer.dhillon@umanitoba.ca to discuss how to be admitted and registered prior to the January 25th start date. To view the Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Applied Leadership click herePBCAL_Info.

We Are Changing Our Name!

November 5, 2015

We are changing our name!

As part of the Annual General Meeting on October 5th, the membership ratified a name change to better reflect the growth of CIM in Manitoba.

The Canadian Institute of Management – Winnipeg Branch is now the Canadian Institute of Management – Manitoba Chapter!

Our geographic area of responsibility for CIM is for the province of Manitoba, so the name change will better reflect this as we develop strategic partnerships with the Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba and Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, as well as enhance our marketing to the business community throughout Manitoba.

We should all be proud of Manitoba as the largest chapter in the Canadian Institute of Management and continue to work hard at growing the CIM brand in Manitoba.

In the near future we will be making some changes to our website and contact information. Stay tuned…

Thank you,

Dennie Cormack BA, C.I.M.

Vice-President of Marketing and Communications

Professional Manager Designations

The need for a meaningful professional standard for persons managing the services and resources of our economy was recognized as early as 1942, and led to informal discussion involving business, government and academic leaders. During the late 1950’s these discussions developed into inter-disciplinary studies, culminating in 1967 in an official report which recommended the establishment of a “Professional Manager” designation.

The P.Mgr. designation denotes an academic and practical Canadian experience background which will permit business to look at the holders of this designation with reasonable confidence as to their management skills.

Thomas Ritter, Chapter President, Louise Doberstein, Vice President of Membership, along with Steve Lupky, Director of Professional Managers presented the Professional Manager recipients with their parchments.

Congratulations to our newest Professional Managers

 Heather Kozubski and Christine Makichuk!
