CIM P.R.A.I.S.E. AWARD

Performance Recognition for Achievement, Innovation,
Service & Excellence Award

The Winnipeg branch of the CIM (Canadian Institute of Management) is very active and a driving force in providing quality education and program events to our members, to maximize their CIM membership experience. The CIM Performance Recognition for Achievement, Innovation, Service & Excellence Award recognizes individuals who have contributed to our successes; whether that person is a past Board member, a past Instructor with the CIM program, or a current CIM member/Instructor who has made significant contribution(s) to better our branch and our members’ CIM experience. RonCantiveros-SocialMediaStrategistOverview

The evening progressed with our featured speaker, Ron Cantiveros and his presentation “Creating Addictive Content with Social Media”. Ron is a Social Media Marketing Strategist who enjoys sharing his tactics to successfully create addictive content with social media. His focus is on achieving real results through these important communication tools.

What We Learned

Ron shared impressive statistics and strategies for generating interest for our businesses, organizations and volunteer organizations.

The world of social media is unique in that the information provided is more about providing value with new and fresh content that is of interest to your client base versus selling. Social media typically replaces brochures and standard ads.

Social media has an estimated 16.1 million users in Canada alone. Of the top 20 countries, Canada ranks number 8 for Twitter accounts.

As a common platform that can be used and understood globally, Ron uses social media for both personal and business communication around the world.

Ron shared with us his five key elements to creating successful addictive content:

Ron Cantiveros - Creating Addictive Content with Social Media1.  Creating instant rapport

  • Branding
  • First impressions
  • Getting people to like you

2.  Creating relevance

  • All about content
  • Graphics to reach clients
  • Creating a strong content strategy
  • Taking advantage of current events, ie., Telus and the Ikea Monkey Darwin ad

3.  Instant gratification

  • All about style vs. substance
  • Content has to be developed in small “devourable” formats that can be quickly shared

4.  Share-ability

  • Move from emails for mass sharing to single click instant share solutions
  • Take advantage of easy on-line tools and websites to generate share-ability
  • Build yourself a tribe of raving fans

5.  Calls to action

  • Not necessarily about sales, it’s about gaining followers
  • Tease readers with more content
  • Keeping your followers engaged throughout

Resources

Ron provided useful resources that will assist us in our own social media adventure:

  • Free e-books on using social media for business are available at www.HubSpot.com
  • A social media dashboard tool to help you manage all your social media networks is available at www.HootSuite.com
  • Short articles on maximizing the use of social media are published daily at www.SocialMediaExaminer.com

Q & A

Q. Are businesses getting away from their web pages and moving to social media?

A. They should work in tandem. Social media should be used to draw users to your website. It is good to note that social media is being used more and more to communicate and connect with clients. For example, Shaw now accepts technical and customer support requests through Twitter.

Q. Which social media platform would you invest in?

A. Determine which platform your client base uses. You should also consider how much you want to control feedback or client commentary. The evolution of technology will dictate how people and businesses communicate with each other, so stay flexible.

Q. Do you recommend separate Linked In pages, one for business and one for personal?

A. You can generate as many pages as you want based on your goals and needs. Consider your strategies and decide what works best for you.

In Conclusion …

This Careers in Motion event was an evening well spent. I had an opportunity to network with CIM members as well as other guests. I took away some good information regarding social media, as well as some nice shwag from our UofM continuing education partners.
